Mrs. fielding's 5th grade info
Dear Parents and Families,
I’m extremely thrilled that we get to work together to ensure that your 5th grader has an exceptional 5th grade year! This is an important year for your student as they prepare for middle school and they will be held to high expectations. I’ll be expecting them to be accountable, responsible and to make good decisions. I’ll be there to help guide them in the right direction, of course! This packet should help you understand more about my 5th grade class. I included it on the website so you will be able to refer back to it throughout the school year. Friday Folders Friday Folders will be brought home every Friday. Please go through all of the items in the folder with your student. There will be graded student work, permission slips, important flyers and so on. As we try to move more to a “green” world, I will only send home important information in their Friday Folder. Please return by Monday. Homework To promote responsible work habits, I would recommend that each evening a period of time be set aside for homework. Establishing a routine (time and place) will promote a pattern of study habits that will influence a student’s success throughout their school years. Homework reinforces and extends the work the children are doing in class and helps inform you about the kind of progress your child is making. In addition, homework helps in the preparation of your student for the fifth grade Colorado state assessments. A homework folder/binder/planner should come back and forth to school each day. We encourage students to choose their own organization style. A spiral bound student planner is a must for reminding students of their assignment and informing you of what your child has to do as homework that evening, for the week and any future projects. If lost, students will be responsible for replacing their planner. It is essential that your student take the responsibility to finish their homework accurately and return it when it is due. Students are expected to read for 30 minutes a night. I’m definitely okay with them bringing books from my library home to read. Some students like to read one book and carry it back and forth, or have a book at school to read and a book at home. Please ensure that your child is getting their nightly reading in. Time in text is one of the biggest factors of students making reading growth. I try and foster and love for books and reading in class and let’s ensure your child enjoys reading and is a reader! Practicing math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are an “on-going” type of homework. As a fifth grader, it is imperative that your child learns their basic facts so more complex math operations will be easier for them. Please use the Family Letters for each unit to find helpful ideas for homework and activities to do with your child. Students will bring home math homework (called a study link) most nights. I’ve included the website to find and print them out if your student forgot or misplaced them. Unfinished class work will need to be brought home, completed and returned. Discipline/Behavior Chart I use a behavior chart in my classroom for students to stay on track. There are for levels – Outstanding, Good, Warning and Oops. Students start every day on Good and may end up moving their clips up or down throughout the day, depending on their behavior. If students move down, they have the ability to move back up as I believe in second chances. Outstanding - 2 Paw Prides Good - 1 paw pride Warning - no paw pride Oops – They bring home an Oops Ticket explaining why they ended the day on Oops. Please sign and return the following day. The only way to get off of Oops is by bringing a signed ticket back, or a call or e-mail home. Classroom money will be given this year via Class Dojo. Students earn money by asking a great question, being an active participant, “be uncommon”, get compliments from other staff members, coming to school and being on time, doing their classroom job well, being a great teammate and winning a class or group challenge. It can be taken away due to not doing their assigned classroom job, missing work, “no name” on a paper, office referral, Oops ticket, dirty desk/area, and being tardy. Classroom money will be deposited into student checkbooks. Four times a year, we will have classroom auctions where classroom money can be spent! As a part of our school-wide PBS system, there is a prize cart that comes around monthly. Students may use their Paw Prides to buy prizes on the prize cart! Birthdays On the day of the kiddo’s birthday, we will sing, play a birthday game chosen by the student, and they will get a special birthday seat. We will celebrate all of the birthdays of the month on the last Wednesday of the month. We will go outside for an extra recess, play a kickball game, or have some free time in the classroom. We are not doing food birthday treats this year. Remind and e-mail are the easiest ways to reach me. Let me know if you need anything! I’m looking forward to a great year. |
